This guide provides everything needed for educators to develop an exciting marine science program. The “General Information” portion of this guide will give elementary instructors excellent information that can be used to teach their classes about mollusks. It was written so that it can be used by elementary and middle school teachers, but it is detailed enough to be used for high school and entry level college classes.
The second portion of the guide includes the scripts of both videos. The guide for each video section includes the special points of interest that can be pointed out to the students. Links to reference websites for that specific section are also included within the section.
The guide’s final portion provides science classroom activities that may be used as is or modified for specific classes or grade levels. For inland schools and colleges, suggestions are presented on the use of fresh water and terrestrial members of phylum Mollusca as a base of study.
Over 70 links to on-line research resources are provided for further individualized study. Twenty printable photographs of mollusks and sand dollars are provided for use in the classroom.
Joyce Matthys and Susan Sprout, a retired science teacher, authored the teacher’s guide. Susan is a knowledgeable volunteer at The Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum and also teaches a course about mollusks at the Sanibel Island Public School.
