About the Author

Joyce Matthys is a resident of Salem, Oregon. Since 1993, she has spent her winters shell collecting on Sanibel Island, Florida. While beachcombing, Joyce started filming live mollusks to show her grandchildren how these tiny creatures move, eat and reproduce.

Joyce's interest in mollusks led her to become a docent at the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum on Sanibel. As a museum volunteer she helped develop a new education program for high school students. While working on the new cirriculum Joyce began to catalog her vast collection of video clips and decided to edit them into a film for classroom presentation. Mollusks in Action, the resulting video, was completed in 2003. It met with such approval that the museum began to show it to the general public throughout the day. In 2008, Trails & Tales of Living Seashells was released and is also shown daily at Bailey-Matthews. Both videos are filmed, produced and narrated by the author.

Joyce's work was recently recognized in the January/February 2009 issue of Times of the Islands, Southwest Florida’s Island Coast Magazine.
